Conflict between the Individual and Society in Jeanette Winterson’s Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit

Jeanette Winterson’s novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (1985) illustrates story of a young girl, Jeanette, who experiences suppressive upbringing at hands her mother and surroundings. Through portrayal transition into adulthood, novel touches on numerous challenging issues such as gender, identity, reliability mainstream patriarchal discourse. The main character’s gradual transformation reveals controversial aspects society juxtaposed with sexual orientation lesbian oppositional stance against ingrained doctrine Church. This study will, in this respect, discuss Jeanette’s rebellion an individual oppressive through specific references from primary source relevant secondary sources ultimate attempt to reveal how gender roles, truth are all discursive practices.
